Congrats to Olivia Whitt – QLD Committee Member, and introducing arkin.
Many of you would have seen our Brisbane Strategy and Content Coordinator, Olivia Whitt, either at an event or gracing our social media pages. But what many of you wouldn’t know, is that she has spent the past few months busily preparing to launch arkin., a Brisbane-based consultancy created to set construction-sector businesses up for success through project-winning proposals.
With the business officially launched on October 19th 2020, we sat down with Olivia to talk all things arkin. and starting a business during a global pandemic.
So, first thing- what inspired you to start arkin. and why now?
Good question! Running a consultancy is something that I have always wanted to do, and the COVID-19 pandemic simply brought that plan forward by a few years.
Working in construction, I saw that there was a gap in the market- I have never met a builder who actually enjoys putting together proposals, and they are often too busy running their current projects to focus on winning new ones. With a background in construction, design and marketing, and passion for championing ambitious brands, I decided that COVID provided a great opportunity for me to take that leap and provide that much-needed service.
What exactly does arkin. do? And who are your ideal clients?
We work primarily with builders and fit out companies, but also with subcontractors, consultants, and manufacturers.
In terms of crafting a ‘project-winning proposal’, what we do really depends on the company that we’re partnering with. There’s no ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach, instead we tailor a package to suit the client’s needs. That could be anything from an overall tender template, to a capability statement, case studies, staff profiles…..basically anything that helps communicate, and essentially sell, who they are, what they do and what makes them the right choice for a project.
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given in starting a business?
I’m always reverting to this, but the best would have to be, ‘Done is better than perfect’. Starting a business requires a huge amount of agility and ‘think on your feet’, and as a perfectionist it’s been a big learning curve to realise that getting caught in the details simply isn’t an option.
Where would you like to see arkin. 5 years from now?
Having just launched, that’s a big question! But in five years I would love to be known as a leader in the field and trusted partner of successful construction-sector businesses. I want the brand to grow beyond just me and become a team of strategic thinkers, creators, and go-getters. And I want it to be known that it is a female-lead company crafted for a male-dominated industry.
Thanks so much for the chat, and good luck with the launch!
