NSW WIDAC X FDC Education Scholarship

Scholarship winner

A huge congratulations to our NSW Educational Scholarship Winner, Sarrah Obeid sponsored by FDC.

Let’s hear a bit more about Sarrah journey so far and how this scholarhsip will impact her career.

Congratulations on being awarded the WIDAC X FDC Education Scholarship for NSW.

Can you tell us about yourself and your company?

I am Sarrah and I am the founder of Plannery. We do planning and programming in construction.

We do all kinds of programs including construction, development, tender and EOT prep and assessment. We particularly love doing tender programs as it allows us to work remotely on projects all over the country. We currently have clients in all states and territories.

As well as program prep, we also have Plannery Academy. Plannery Academy does program training workshops, both online and in person. We developed the online workshops during lockdown, and we really enjoy doing them. Again, we are thrilled that we can work with so many different construction professionals all over Australia.

Plannery is a breath of fresh air in a traditionally stale section of the industry. Construction is fun and funny and the best thing about construction is the people. This is why we have a very casual culture and like to get to know our clients. At the end of the day, we are all people so I’m not sure why we try and act like robots.

This is why my title on my business card is – Founder, Head Planner, Boxing Fan. We like to celebrate the fact that we are all unique and have lives outside work.

Tell us about your journey in the industry so far?

So, a bit about my journey to Plannery.

First off, I love construction. I’m lucky that I found the industry where I know I belong so early in my career. I say this because initially, I studied property at uni.

During uni, I got a job in a construction company in the property department. And I fell in love with the construction stuff and wasn’t too fussed about property.

So, the rest is history as they say.

I worked my way up the ranks and got the opportunity to work in the planning department for a construction company. During the financial crisis, when lots of construction companies where going bust, I was able to use my planning experience to get a planning consultant role.

It was an amazing skill to have as I continued my career in project management while doing a lot of planning too. I continued to progress in my career working client’s side but something was missing.

Then came the 1/3 life crisis. Suddenly, the fluorescent lights in the office became blinding and my cubicle started to close in on me. Ok, that was super dramatic, but you get the idea – I didn’t like working in an office anymore.

You know the fable about how to boil a frog? It goes like this:

– If you put a frog in a pot of boiling water it will instantly leap out. But if you put it in a pot filled with pleasantly tepid water and gradually heat it, the frog will stay in the water until it boils to death.

This is what was happening to me in my cubicle.

So, I made the leap before I boiled to death in my cubicle.

I leapt into Plannery and I am so happy that I did. I am so passionate about what I do and I love working for myself. I can’t believe that it took me so long to work out that this is the right path for me.

But …. every blessing meant for me was not a minute late. (words stolen from a rapper)

Are there any recent product developments or projects you’d like to share?

We now offer 3 courses through Plannery Academy online and 7 modules that we offer in person.

Central to our workshops is that they are completely interactive. That means that each participant follows along with the instructor to create their own program or EOT claim from scratch.

We know that a topic like planning can not be learnt by just listening to someone talk about it.

All our workshops are therefore completely hands on and each participant walks away with a program or EOT claim that they have prepared themselves (with the help of the experts of course).

Again, Plannery has a very lighthearted culture, and we bring this to all of our Plannery Academy workshops. We know that planning can be dry enough without a dull instructor and boring content.

What course are you going be doing?

We would like to add 3D modelling to our services. This will compliment our programs to demonstrate how the building with come together in real time. It is a service that has been requested of us in the past but have not been able to confirm as an offering.

So, we would like to change that.

I will be doing a REVIT foundations level 1 and level 2 course. And then the Advanced 3D REVIT architecture course.

I would really like to thank WIDAC and FDC for this opportunity. I’m really looking forward to doing the courses and adding this offering to Plannery.

We can’t wait to see Sarrah’s journey continue and take off within this ever-changing, fast-paced industry. Congratulations Sarrah!
